‘I was born here in Salt Lake City but my family comes from Somalia. Our community interacts with everyone. We come together to keep our traditions alive, even here in Salt Lake City. We’re close to each other and we tell stories to remember who we are and the road we’re traveling. I hope to go back to Somalia after I’m done with my schooling. One thing I think a lot of people don’t know about Somalia is that we’re not all pirates. I know everyone associates Somalis with piracy. The majority of Somalis frown upon what the pirates in the news are doing. Those pirates are not representative of the teachings of Islam that peaceful Somalis strive to follow.’
